+ OVERVIEW The CHI 2008 International Student Design Competition challenge centered on the problem of homelessness. Our team designed a web-based information system to aid a distributed network of healthcare professionals and other homeless care professionals (HCPs)to better share, manage, and communicate information vital to effective healthcare. + USER RESEARCH An extensive literature review revealed that poor health is a signficant problem among the homeless, carrying high health and financial costs for the both the homeless and the general public. Our team conducted contextual interviews with 14 homeless care professionals, including doctors, social workers, case managers, and shelter staff. We also distributed surveys to homeless health organizations throughout the U.S. Affinity diagramming was used to help generate design insights from the large amounts of qualitative data we obtained.
+ HEALTHSHARE CONCEPT Our proposed design is a web-based application to be used by HCPs. Registered users will be able to log into the system to update their homeless client's contact information or to search for and view the information already entered into the system. Appointment information may also be stored, as well as basic health information, such as concerns about non-compliance with medication. Aggregated information is used to help identify at-risk clients.
+ EVALUATION We recruited three HCPs to evaluate our initial prototypes of HealthShare. Our testing was done using paper prototypes and Scenario Based Testing. Overall, our participants felt that HealthShare would aid them and their clients and, owing to its simplicity, could be easily integrated with current practices and complement existing software. + PUBLICATIONS: Pierce, J., Engelhardt, A.
